EVO 07 Workshop Syllabus:

Title: EVO Video 2007: ESL/EFL Student Video Production

Abstract:
EVO Video 2007: ESL/EFL Student Video Production is a free workshop for all teachers interested in learning how to create and share video on the web, what kinds of video projects other teachers are producing with their classes, and how they're doing it. Although not required, access to a mini DV camera and high-speed internet is recommended.

Objectives:
  • Create a short video and upload it to the web.
  • Modify one of lesson plans presented to something you can use with your class.
  • Share your work with the rest of the group and brainstorm, comment on, and/or develop new materials.

1. Read the article "Video Online" by Elizabeth Hanson-Smith and Mike Marzio.
2. Quickly complete the Needs Assessment Survey.
3. Read the Netiquette document and take the self-quiz. (There are two links to the quiz... the second seems to work better.)
4. Create your own wiki page and link it to the side bar under "Participant Pages." Here's how:

5. Please go ahead and look over everything that we will cover in this session. There are several resources listed in Week 2... you might want to get an early start with some of that information - or perhaps even the activity of that week.

Week 1: Jan. 15 – Jan. 21
This week we’ll introduce ourselves and talk about why we’re taking this session. Participants will learn how to navigate the Yahoo Group and upload files to the wiki (photos) in addition to completing the Needs Assessment Survey and Netiquette Quiz (if not already completed Pre-Session).

1. Introduce yourself to our EVO group of teachers and trainers by sending an email message to EVOvideo07 at yahoogroups.com. Tell us a little about:
  • Where you teach, and what level and age group you’re teaching
  • What your students would like about class-video projects
  • Your past experiences with video and/or class-video projects (include links to examples if possible)
  • Any video production literature you might be using
  • Some of subjects and topics you'd like to learn more about during this session

2. Upload your photo to the PHOTOS area of our Wiki.

3. Configure your Yahoo Group and Yahoo Email Account settings. Set your options in our Yahoo Group to receive individual messages or to get a daily digest, so you'll know what others have written. To do that, click on Edit My Membership on the top right of our YG front page. Under Message Delivery, check either Individual Emails or Daily Digest. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the screen. You may also want to configure your Yahoo Account so that all email from our group goes to one folder – THIS IS EASY TO DO AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Week 2: Jan. 22 – Jan. 28
This week we’ll go over the basics of shooting, capturing, editing and uploading video to hosting sites such as YouTube and Grouper. Materials for this week include several online tutorials and a special “How to” video by Sarah Lilburn of The Daily English Show!

Activities:

1. Write to the group your comments about and impressions of this week’s materials. Please include in your post any links to other resources that you have found helpful.

2. Working alone or with some friends, create a short (1-2min) personal narrative or documentary style video and share it with the group. Actually, your video can be anything -- the goal of the exercise is to work through the technical process presented in this week’s materials. Focus on the process: plan, shoot, capture, edit (try to make at least 7 edits), export, and upload to YouTube, Revver, Google, etc..
Your video should be simple and short and share something about the place where you are.
Once you’ve upload your video to the web, post either your video or the link to you video to your wiki page and invite the group to watch it.

Week 3: Jan. 29 – Feb. 4
This week we will go over several lesson plans and discuss means of customizing them for use in our own class, taking into account things like: time, budget, class size and skill level, etc.. (Many thanks to EVO colleagues for sharing these lesson plans, storyboards, and example videos with us.)

Week 6: Feb. 19 – Feb. 25
This week we’ll look at TESOL’s Resource Center and other teacher resource sites. Participants are encouraged to upload their lesson plans for other teachers to use and refer too. We will also briefly discuss release forms, class networks, and close with session evaluations.

Moderator Bios

Ryan Detwiler earned his BA in English and TESL Certificate at the University of California in Santa Barbara. In 1998 he taught video production to a high intermediate class of ESL students and has been hooked on producing video and web-based content ever since. After living and teaching in France and Japan for a couple of years, Ryan moved to San Francisco, California, to get an MFA in Motion/Pictures and Television at the Academy of Art University. In March of 2005 he founded ESL Video, Inc., an educational software development / production company. Ryan currently lives in JapanTown, San Francisco with his wife, Kayo, son, Kaishu, and daughter, Mikoto.


Nicolas Gromik currently works at Tohoku University in Japan. He has been using and training students to produce videos of various genres for the last three years ranging from basic videotaping with Senior High School students, as well as sophomore and advanced Japanese speakers of English. He is currently experimenting with the art of mini documentary video making.
