Title: News Report
Description: Create a 1-3 min, interview-based news report.
Level: low-intermediate to advanced

Materials and technology:
  • TV with VHS / DVD player
  • Hand held microphone.
  • DV Camera / Computer with editing software

Overview:
  • 1. Watch and analyze one or more short news reports where people are interviewed.
  • 2. Get into groups and select a subject. Develop several interview questions about your subject.
  • 3. Class discussion of subjects and interview questions.
  • 4. Turn in your News Report outline: topic / set up / interview questions.
  • 5. Produce your news report.
  • 6. Edit your news report.
  • 7. Final product will be presented in class on (date) .

Procedure:
1. Watch and analyze one or more short news reports where people are interviewed. Identify the key parts of the report:
  • set up
  • hook (the report's 'statement of purpose.')

2. Get into groups and select a subject. Discuss how you'll set up or frame your subject, what you hope to find out, and list possible interview questions.

3. Teacher lead / Class Discussion: Share your subject and interview questions with the class. Are the questions well formatted? Are they too vague? Are they yes/no questions? Take note of teacher and class feedback.

4. Develop the final outline of your News Report and turn it in. This outline should include information about your subject, the set up, and the questions you plan to ask your interviewees.

5. Produce your News Report. Take turns operating camera, assisting/directing the production, and interviewing people. (Each member of the group should be asking questions.)

6. Edit your news report to include the:
  • set up
  • hook (the report's 'statement of purpose.')
  • presentation of two or more points of view
  • conclusion

7. Present your News Report to the class/ Watch the News Reports in class.
